Welcome to this week's edition of your About Programming Newsletter. This week we are looking at:

Normalizing a Table

Transition filters, tempting but not a good idea

LINQ - Starting a New Series

Why JRuby?

As well as many other programming articles. Enjoy, and have a great week!

Normalizing a Table
I recently had to normalize the attached table for my final exam of my database course. I got really turned around because all of our other examples, we had composite primary keys that would be used to uniquely identify everything that was on the normalized form. Yet with this example, I really only need to use PropertyID, Listing Agent or the Office Phone to uniquely select anything on this table. So how do I go about getting this to the third normal form

Transition filters, tempting but not a good idea
Many web designers desperate to get features like CSS transitions, shadows, and opacity into Internet Explorer have resorted to using a feature that Microsoft introduced to IE 4 and ultimately removed from IE 9--CSS filters. Learn more about this IE features and why you should avoid them, even if you are tempted.

LINQ - Starting a New Series
LINQ - Language INtegrated Query - is probably the most successful innovation in .NET since ... well ... since .NET. There have been lots of others ... MVC, Entity Frameworks, WPF. But they just haven't hit a home run like LINQ has. There's an old saying that success has many fathers but failure is an orphan. LINQ has lots of "homes" these days. It's being included in more and more data technologies. So this week, I'm starting a new series about LINQ.

Why JRuby?
Java. That single word is enough to turn many programmers away. If you're one of those people (and even if you aren't), you should read this article on why you should be using JRuby. It's perhaps not what you think it is, and certainly has its advantages.
