| | From Chad Bowar, your About Music Editor Now that 2011 is in the rear-view mirror, it is time to look ahead to what 2012 has to offer. Some great music is in the pipeline for this year, and our music guides have a preview. | | The Future Of R&B: 2012 Edition For years, music critics and fans had been heralding the death of R&B, saying that the genre is on its last legs. But obviously R&B and Soul music are still around and probably will be as long as music exists. And yours truly is here to testify: there's 11 artists who have only released singles and mixtapes up to this point, but will (hopefully) release full debut albums in 2012 that'll prove that good R&B/Soul music is still very much alive. | 2012 Music Festival Preview Here's a happy thought as you contemplate the gray skies, cold temperatures, snow, ice and other winter highlights. It's only a few months until the spring/summer outdoor music festival season begins. Already, several major classic rock artists have signed up for 2012 festival appearances. | New Blues Releases: January 2012 The cupboard is going to be mighty lean this month in terms of the quantity of new blues CD releases, but that doesn't mean that there's not going to be anything for listeners to gnaw on! Expect quality discs from Joe Louis Walker, Ruthie Foster, Ray Bailey, and the others to provide a little meat on the bone while a classic anthology from Bo Carter & the Mississippi Sheiks should help carry you over until next month. | Artists To Watch In 2012: SMOD On my list of bands to watch is an Afro-hip-hop trio from Mali called SMOD. Their eponymous international debut made quiet waves among critics in both Europe and North America, but their recent much-talked-about performance at WOMEX, soon to be paired with their U.S. debut at globalFEST, are what really have people's ears perked up. | | | | Music Ads | | | | Featured Articles | | | | More from About.com | | | | | | Living with Depression By obtaining the correct medical intervention and learning better coping skills, you can not only live with depression, but live well.
