Every year, there's a whole new crop of acts who go from essentially unknown to well-known, trading up from one-time obscurity to something resembling popularity. Sometimes, it comes due to scandalous, hysterical hype; other times, it's the end result of years of slow growth, where a cult following suddenly tips over into a broader audience. Other times, the phenomenon seems inexplicable.

It's only fair that if we're going to salute the year's best records that we also take a moment to hold our nose for the stinkiest offerings of the last 12 months. It's not going to be pretty, folks, but it has to be done.

Maybe it's a result of music being even more readily available than ever, who knows. At any rate, 2011 was a rather productive year when it comes to new folk and Americana artists. It seems incredible, imaginative artists were popping up all over the place, presenting new blendings of American folk music with various other styles.
