| | From Angela Bradley, your About Programming Editor Dear Subscriber, Welcome to this week's edition of your About Programming Newsletter. This week we talk about a real C problem, crypting your INI files, and a Rails installer for OS X. Have a great week! | | An interesting Real C problem I can do this using trig functions, but I wondered if it was possible to do it quicker with ints. It's from the Asteroids tutorial code. As part of the collision detection (yes that again!) I need to determine which of eight 45 degree octants one object is, compared to the other. In the example shown, the function should return 3 (yes I know they're not touching). | Crypting Your INI (Configuration) Files INI files are text based documents with a simple structure. A user can open your INI files using Notepad or similar applications and see or manually change the content. | RailsInstaller for OS X Released Just last week I decided that it could not wait, I had written an article on installing Ruby on Rails on OS X. While not very difficult, there are a few steps involved, and it's not something that's completely obvious how to do for the newcomer. No sooner than I had written this article, the awesome guys at EngineYard released RailsInstaller for OS X. I have yet to test it, but assuming it all works according to plan, it should be the simplest and only recommended way to install Rails for both the professional and newbie. | MyClass If you haven't had exactly the right requirement in one of your programs, you might not even be aware that the MyClass keyword exists. Most people need to use the much more common Me and MyBase keywords every now and then, but MyClass covers a fairly specialized and unique requirement. This Quick Tip explains what it is. | | | | Programming Ads | | | | Featured Articles | | | | More from About.com | | | | | | Bake Sale Bestsellers Make your next bake sale a profitable one with these irresistible recipes.
