Dear Subscriber,
Welcome to this week's edition of your About Programming Newsletter. This week we take a look at how web design changes with high speed connections. We also look at the "custom" keyword, as well as reference methods in Ruby.
Have a great week!

Is speed really still important with high-speed connections?
This got me to thinking. In one sense, DazzaJ is exactly right, most users (at least in the United States) are viewing the web on broadband connections or at work, and speed benefits that cause a page to load one or two milliseconds faster aren't going to be noticed by them. But if this is really true, then why do web optimization experts like Google and Yahoo! recommend doing them?

Handling Events - The Custom Keyword
After posting my most recent article about custom event handlers, I realized that I hadn't covered the actual "Custom" event handler. It turns out that Microsoft doesn't actually cover it either. While Microsoft's site does have a couple of examples (linked in my latest article), they never really explain what the Custom keyword does.

References to Methods in Ruby
Trick question: How do you take a reference to a method in Ruby? It's a trick question because a method cannot exist on its on in Ruby. Ruby doesn't have "function pointers." You might guess that you can simply store the object and a symbol with the method name, and you'd be right. Or a proc object that calls the method on the object, and again you'd be right.
