I realize that we're on the upward swing of daylight, but it's still very dark, very early, and it's chilly, to boot. The silver lining, of course, is that there's no better way to pass a blustery winter's night than with a hot drink and a good book!

Good Books to Read in Winter
Some books have a wintery theme, while others just lend themselves well to crackling fireplaces. Here are a few great reads for long nights.

Review: 'The Third Reich' by Roberto Bolano
Our Guide to Contemporary Literature, Mark Flanagan, describes The Third Reich as a "somewhat surrealist tourism-drama about a German board-game champion who, while on vacation on the coast of Spain and intermingling with a cast of shady characters, slides quietly into emotional breakdown." It certainly sounds intriguing enough, and our reviewer gave it a whopping five stars, so I think we're on the right track here.

Review: 'Legend' by Marie Wu
Did you like The Hunger Games books? If so, this first book in a new young adult dystopian trilogy just might be the next best thing for you.

'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' by James Joyce
I mentioned last week that part of my New Year's Resolution is to read at least 20 classic novels that I've never read before. First on my list is A Portrait.... I've read both Ulysses and Finnegan's Wake, but somehow never made it through this one, and I'm jumping in with both feet. Because I don't have any English professors holding my hand through this one, I'm using this List of Questions for Study and Discussion to keep me on task. Believe it or not, this is great fun for me!
