| | From Angela Bradley, your About Programming Editor Dear Subscriber, Welcome to this week's edition of your About Programming Newsletter. This week we are taking a look at how to calculate Thanksgiving Day using PHP. We also look at compliers, Digraphs in Ruby, and Access VBA. Have a great week! | | Calculate Thanksgiving Day with PHP Some holidays have specific PHP functions, however PHP is not one of them! You can still calculate the date of Thanksgiving using PHP, because we know that (in the USA) it always falls on the forth Thursday in November. | Interested in Compilers? At university I was quite interested in compilers and even wrote an integer Basic -> 6502 compiler in 1983. It didn't sell many copies and was probably not the greatest bit of programming I have ever done, but it was quite fun. | Making Digraphs in Ruby Digraphs (or "directed graphs") are a very useful tool for visualizing data. It will generate graphs for visualizing a number of nodes and edges, giving you a graphical representation of "network" type data representations. This can be used for hierarchies and tree structures, filesystems, you Rails models, or anything else with this type of relationship. And it's all very easy to use, so why not generate graphs for everything? | Access VBA Of all the Office applications, I find Access to be the most "unusual". It looks to me like a system that was put together by a negotiating committee. I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall listening to the designers argue about what would be in and what would be out. | | | | Programming Ads | | | | Featured Articles | | | | More from About.com | | | | | | What is ADD?
