Dr. Beach's number one beach heaven for 2012 is Coronado Beach, a wide, flat stretch of silvery sand in San Diego, California. After several appearances in the top 10, this beach--home to the photogenic, Victorian-era Hotel Del Coronado--has locked up the top spot on Leatherman's annual list.

The South Sands Hotel on the beach of the same name in Salcombe, South Devon, is one of a new but still rare breed of English boutique hotels that combine international standards of luxury with modern beach style.
