| | From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor This week, we're having a look at some books that are, well, a bit strange. Not scary, exactly, or totally off-the-cliff weird, just... strange. | | '1Q84' - Haruki Murakami The latest English translation from Japanese surrealist novelist Haruki Murakami (Norwegian Wood, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle), 1Q84 follows Aomame, an attractive young woman who steps out of a taxi in 1984 and into a parallel dimension in 1Q84, as well as the young copywriter who seems to be crafting her new existence. | 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' - Ransom Riggs This young adult novel, released in June of this year, is becoming a fast favorite on the grown-up circuit. Our reviewer draws comparisons to TV's Heroes and the Harry Potter series, two favorites of mine. | 'Aleph' - Paulo Coehlo Paulo Coelho (The Alchemist, The Winner Stands Alone) is known for writing mystical, mind-bending tales, and this one is no different. This one is his most personal, and yet it contains spiritual elements that can't possibly be real... or can they? | 'The Recognitions' - William Gaddis A classic that, statistically speaking, you've probably never read, The Recognitions is a hugely influential novel that not many people have ever picked up. Written in 1955 and clocking in at a monstrous 1,000 pages, this beacon of postmodernism has been cited by a number of your favorite writers (really!) as one of their favorites. Perhaps it's worth a read? | | | | Books & Literature Ads | | | | Featured Articles | | | | More from About.com | | | | | | Food and Mood Indulging a sweet tooth can cause weight gain, guilt and even worsen depression.
