Those of us old enough to remember MTV's debut know that it used to be vitally important in breaking new bands and exposing music to the general public. These days the music videos are hard to find, and it's mostly reality shows. Our guides look back on some of the highlights and memorable moments in the history of MTV.

Songs From MTV's First Day Of Broadcasting
Almost everyone remembers that the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star" was the inaugural music video shown on MTV at its August 1, 1981 launch. Many also know that Pat Benatar's "You Better Run," a cover version of a Rascals classic, was next on the playlist. But what about the remaining several dozen tunes that made up the fledgling network's first day of programming?

Although a very different but still active entity today, MTV galloped through the '80s, for better and sometimes for worse, as a definite arbiter of musical taste, style and fashion. During the early '80s, the fledgling network helped introduce an entire stable of new music stars from Madonna to Cyndi Lauper to Def Leppard.
