About Books & Literature: The Best (and Worst) of 2011

From Megan Romer, your About Books & Literature Editor
This is one of my favorite weeks of the year. There's minimal work to be done and there's a big stack of brand-new books just waiting to be read. Now, if only it would snow so I could have a real excuse to hole up indoors...

The Top 10 Books of 2011
My big Christmas gift this year was a new e-reader, and I've got a few small online gift certificates burning a hole in my (virtual) pocket, so I'm planning on filling it up with a month's worth of good reads. I read a lot of books this year, but I certainly didn't read all of them, so I'm having fun choosing which ones to download. If you're in the same boat, this list is a great place to start.

The Most Overrated Books of 2011
Not all of 2011's hottest releases were big winners, though. Check out our own Erin Collazo Miller's picks for the biggest let-downs of the year, and share your own least favorite while you're at it!

100 Words and Phrases That Ticked You Off in 2011
Richard Nordquist has assembled the 100 most obnoxious words and phrases of 2011. Some made the cut because they are ungrammatical, others because they're overused, and others because, for reasons not worth overanalyzing, are just plain annoying. Check them out!

2011's Best Books-Into-Movies
For those who enjoy both the page and the screen, 2011 was a great year, and these book-to-film adaptations made it all the sweeter. And it looks like 2012 will be a great year for adaptations as well!

About Healthy Eating: Smart Steps Towards Healthy Eating

About.com

From Fiona Haynes, your About Healthy Eating Editor
One way to give yourself a better chance of sticking to your healthy eating resolution is to be disciplined yet flexible. It's not quite the oxymoron it sounds. If the sound of following a Low Fat Diet or a Low Carb Diet sounds too daunting, begin slowly rather than go cold turkey. If you lean towards going low carb, resolve first to cut sugar; if you veer towards low fat, then look at ways that you can replace saturated fats with arguably better-for-you fats.

How to Eat Less Sugar
Perhaps the best way to embark on the road to cutting carbs is to cut sugar in your diet. Of course, sugar is everywhere, especially in processed foods -- both sweet and savory. Here are some strategies to help.

30 Ways to Cut Fat at Mealtimes
Shave excess fat calories from everyday meals by making smart choices and substitutions that limit your fat calories to the so-called good fats, the monounsaturated fats that help combat the effects of saturated and trans fats, which have been linked to raising cholesterol, heart disease and increased risk of stroke.

Eat to Live Longer
Is there really such a thing as an anti-aging diet? Well, there's evidence that people who follow the so-called Mediterranean diet, or other plant-based plans, have lower incidences of coronary heart disease and cancer. Still, eating too much of anything, even "healthy" foods can be harmful. Find out what kinds of foods can promote a longer, healthier life.

What to Do If You Cheat on Your Diet
No matter what dietary approach you try, there will be plenty of opportunities to backslide, and often once that happens, we lose our willpower and kick our good habits to the curb. Yet what we should really do is forgive ourselves and keep going.

From Heather Watkins, your About Health Editor
2011 is almost over, and many of us will be heading to parties this Saturday to ring in the new year.

The Dangers of Holiday Drinking
There are more alcohol-related traffic fatalities during the holiday season than any other time of year in the United States. Here's how to stay safe.

Avoid Drinking Too Much
It's easy to overdo it during the holidays, as many celebrations revolve around drinking, and gifts of alcohol are common. Planning ahead can help.

Five Ways to Say No to a Drink
If you've chosen to limit your drinking, it can be tough to face peer pressure from friends (yes, even adults!). Here are five smart ways to decline a drink without feeling uncomfortable.

Do You Have a Problem?
If you have to ask, or if others in your life have told you that you do, then you may have a drinking problem. These tests can help you determine if it's time to get help.
